We've
previously reported on expected price
increases for NVIDIA GPU kits that the company sells to OEMs, thanks to the AI boom and its resulting
impact on the DRAM supply chain. Now, thanks to a report by Taiwanese publication,
Economic Daily Times, it's been
revealed that NVIDIA's price hike could see consumers paying up to 20-30% more for their GPUs.
This is the third price hike for NVIDIA in 2026, and it's important to note that the prices appear to be
affecting the whole RTX 5000-series, and not just the high-end variants. Unless NVIDIA spreads the cost
burden across the whole line-up of graphics cards, higher-end GPUs should see steeper price increases, since
those are the models in which DRAM makes up a larger portion of the BOM cost.
The outlet predicts that the repeated price increases will have a
chilling effect on the PC market as a whole, with a 10-20% decline in overall hardware sales expected.
Despite the expected sales decline, hardware vendors are still predicted to see increased revenue, thanks to
the price increases.

There's people willing to pay those prices for VRAM, there's nothing you and I can do about it. I believe I have just read the 5080 already sells for more than the MSRP of a 5090. So yeah, a lot of hurt.
Anyway, I got my 5070 late last year for a decent price, don’t really need to be bothered now for years, seeing how basically the only good games these days are NOT heavy on the GPU.
Charge $3000 for a 5070 people will still buy them regardless of price.
Do you really think people won't pay these new prices? PC games are already pushing $100. Console prices have also gone up significantly. Do you think companies haven't done their market research? Don't they know that people will cough up the cash? Don't they know that a 10-15% drop in sales will be more than covered by the increased profit margins?
The only way we’ll ever see proper optimizations is if people start buying older games instead. If we see new generations of gamers choosing to buy and play the original Crysis trilogy, for example. Is there any chance of that happening? Nope. As long as the 5090 exists, games will be marketed using the visuals that this card can deliver. What the gamer actually sees on their screen will simply depend on their hardware.
That whole unhinged rant notwithstanding, can you answer these questions:
1. Do you understand what minimal specs are?
2. Do you understand what volume of sales is actually needed these days for a AAA title to even break even, let alone make a profit?
3. Did you know that, according to market research (the very topic you brought up), 60%+ of game time and revenue for the past several years has been for games that were NOT fresh current releases? In other words - people actually DON’T spend money in the amount you’re suggesting, not on new games at least
Developers absolutely can stop optimizing games, they can start demanding flagship or near-flagship hardware, they can price the games at 70, 80, 100, 169437 dollars, whatever. Do you actually, unironically think that that would be sustainable, considering that we can’t seemingly go a day without another piece of news mentioning lay-offs and blatant financial failure that is AAA gaming? The only reasonable recourse they would have IS to try and make games that can be sold to as many people as possible, which by default means making them hardware accessible too. Or, you know, they can do what you are saying and then the whole thing actually crashes. Not the meme “video game crash” of the 80s, an actual failure of the entire big corpo publisher system. Don’t get me wrong, I would be fine with the latter, just making sure you understand the implications, since you insist that, apparently, companies know what they are doing, even when they blatantly don’t.
@Onasi I think your right that devs can and will start to optimize games better. Some already do. Low settings on call of Duty looks pretty much the same to me.
AMD understood this from the start and never placed a horse in that race to begin with. The 9070 XT might be a lukewarm card unable to beat its own predecessor, but it delivers most of what a normal gamer needs at an affordable price owed to the fact that they intentionally use previous generation memory and cheaper components overall, that is, until GDDR6 supplies also run out. Which, reportedly, will be very soon.
For all their unbelievable stupidity at times, they at least got this right. Knew their own predicament and where the market could have gone (and went), and played their cards right for this market segment.
