AMD FSR Multi-Frame Generation With Up to 8x Mode in Development

AMD has reportedly been testing a new and highly anticipated FSR multi-frame generation (MFG) technology for its Radeon RX GPUs. This information comes from a third-party software called RadeonTuner, which allows access to Radeon driver settings without using the AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition application. RadeonTuner has revealed that AMD is already incorporating preliminary support for multi-frame generation into its Radeon drivers, though the feature remains hidden until the software is finalized. According to the tool's developer, AMD often places placeholders for features like this well in advance of their release, indicating that the company is extensively testing the multi-frame generation feature with options for 1x to 8x variants, which are expected to be available once the feature is fully developed.

One user attempted to enable the multi-frame generation feature using the latest driver installation and a Radeon RX 9060 XT graphics card to see if it could work with any game. However, the user discovered that the feature is currently non-functional, as AMD has not yet released the necessary model to support multi-frame generation at any setting. This suggests that only the placeholder for the feature has been included, with no underlying driver support to make it operational. Even when testing games that frequently receive FSR updates, such as Forza Horizon 6, Pragmata, Resident Evil 9, Crimson Desert, and Death Stranding 2, the feature could not be activated. It seems we are still months away from the final release of multi-frame generation support.
It's worth noting that AMD is late to the MFG game, as NVIDIA has already released its DLSS Dynamic MFG feature with up to 6x generation capability, and Intel has been offering XeSS MFG with a 4x setting for several months as part of the XeSS 3 release. Additionally, AMD GPUs currently lack hardware-based flip metering for frame pacing, relying instead on software pacing to maintain consistent frame generation. Therefore, it makes sense for MFG to be included in the current Radeon RX 9000 series and potentially in future RDNA 5 / UDNA GPU IP if they incorporate dedicated hardware-based flip metering for frame pacing.

Maybe this is a change in tack after the recent leaks?! Especially considering there was a noticeable difference between the leaked and officially released upscaler, no?

*I believe AncientGameplays alluded to new feature(s) expected in the .7 driver release. If that does indeed happen this month?!*

The placeholder most likely calls a .dll in Windows. Those who have that .dll will not have a placeholder.

I assume many nivida buyers want those features. Therefore we will see taht on the amd side also.

it would be interesting to compare frame gen side by side on a 9070 xt and rtx 5080, see if i could tell a difference in actual gameplay. so far nvidia has really impressed me, i like multi frame gen personally, its not perfect, but it def improves my experience for some games that support it (not all) smoothness is important to me for immersion

eh, shallow take imo

in banishers of new eden last night, turning on frame gen just gave me extra smoothness visually, it was nice and altered the game in no way other than improving immersion through smoothness

If it ever becomes more than that, ya i agree with your take then.

I wonder, will MFG attract praise once AMD does it... Not from TPU surely.

Personally I have no real use for MFG using a 120hz display (2x max), seems like the territory of 240hz+ for the benefits to come alive. LSFG 4x turning hard locked 30fps emulation to 120hz has its merits, but I'd imagine like existing FG tech that isn't driver level (AMD fmf and Nvidia smooth motion), it needs to be implemented on a game by game basis.

yeah its really only useful if you have a baseline fps of 90 or higher already, to then launch you to that 240 fps 240hz + range

that being said, I can tell a difference in the smoothness and I find it pleasing personally. I'm sure OLED tech is also carrying some of the weight cause of its 0.1ms latency

Probably more interested in an adaptive frame gen for that reason. I'd personally like to see flicker tackled.

Instead of amd giving us faster cards they are stuck to 2022 performance and keep pushing hallucinations and fake frames instead. Thank god nvidia is pushing performance forward with every generation.

AMD is just following the trend set by who?

If you look at the development from RDNA 2 to 4, you get more performance. The 9070XT performs quite well, considering it has fewer shaders and ROPs (4096 shaders / 128 ROPs) than the top-of-the-range models from previous generations. The 6950XT has 5,120 shaders and 128 ROPs, whilst the 7900XTX has 6,144 shaders and 192 ROPs. Depending on the test environment, the card ranks between the 4070 Ti (7,680 shaders and 80 ROPs) and the 5070 (6,144 shaders and 80 ROPs). One factor that mustn’t be overlooked is that clock speeds have increased with every generation. This applies to both AMD and Nvidia. So, technically speaking, there have been quite a few developments.

What you can hold against AMD is that they follow trends rather than setting their own.

Native 4K at 240Hz without upscaling or AI nonsense – now that would be something.

And yes, developing a chip isn’t something you can just turn on a sixpence two weeks before release; it often takes years of development. Both the hardware and the software. And that’s where Nvidia’s strength lies (or lay) – they defined the software first and then built the chip around it, rather than the other way round.

Thats something I was also wondering since its so trendy to bash Nvidia for its FG.
I'm also sticking to 2x in the games where I'm using it since I cap my FPS at 120 via RTSS even tho I do have a 200Hz display.
Its simply my sweet spot after numerous testing in a variety of games, DOOM Dark Ages was fine uncapped with FG but it was also unnecessary to me at the end of the day.

Adaptive I'm yet to try well enough so I can't say yet if I like it or not.

Take your pick. By 2026, there won’t be a single manufacturer selling you significantly better hardware than what’s ‘new’. I’m keeping an eye on the 5090 SE, but also the 5070, which might just beat the 3090 thanks to MFG.

Getting more performance out of less hardware isn’t a bad thing in itself. And I agree with you – AMD certainly had the potential to compete at the top with RDNA 4. But they didn’t want to, and unfortunately they’re missing out on the budget segment yet again.

The 9060XT could have been the 1060 of its generation. A bread-and-butter graphics card for a relatively modest price. But with a launch price of 299 USD (8GB) or 349 USD (16GB), most people end up opting for the mass-market products from the competition, especially when, on paper, they cost just 50 USD more and you’re constantly being told from all sides that the competition is better in terms of drivers and features. The latter didn’t really pan out in 2025 and 2026, especially as the drivers for the 50 series were a disaster at the start, and the only feature that makes sense on cards like the 5050/5060/5060 Ti is DLSS without MFG. But that’s only to be expected.

Intel has certainly shown what’s possible in the lower end of the market with the B580 and a launch price of 249 USD. Unfortunately, however, it looks as though Intel is pulling out of this segment again and leaving the field to others.

What’s left then? Outdated models from eBay and the like. (Still better than e-wast in a landfill.)
Well, and the general shift away from the DIY and consumer markets, towards data centres and professional users, should by now be obvious to everyone.

And whether the tide will turn again in the future?
I can’t tell you that either. I’ve neither a crystal ball nor do I read tea leaves.

The DIY market will be fine, just as it was after the last 5 calls of doom and gloom. In 2030 we will be hearing horle the rtx 7000s are totally the end of consumer cards and how the AMD 11060xt could have been the next 1060 but it was $300 so nobody bought it because AMD forgot to support their hardware again.

The last 5 shortages or things to cause artificial price hikes didn't affect the entire tech industry with artifical memory and storage shortages. This time the memory manufacturers are colluding and price fixing, while the average person is paying higher costs on everything, and paying for the datacenters as well.
Though on topic, it's interesting the same people that constantly complain AMD doesn't have the same features, also bash on AMD for supporting the same features.
There isn't any winning when the koolaid enjoyers will be the loudest regardless of what AMD does.
Also the issue with Nvidia and frame gen isn't the feature itself, the problem is they're not pushing the industry forward while having a near monopoly on the market, which causes every other company to stagnate on performance gains and instead sell you software features instead.

I actually kinda love the concept of MFG, but in reality I'd be lying if I said I regularly use anything above 2x FG. But again, this isn't a one-size fits all; I can shrug off slightly decreased fidelity cause I myself prefer smoothness over quality. Have I used 3x and 4x FG before? Yes, but in such specific use cases that it's easier to say I don't use it at all, stemming from the reason that the latency from anything above 2x-3x is VERY tangible. Playable, but tangible. Maybe I'm a hypocrite, but at the point where you're generating seven frames for every real one, it just seems kinda ridiculous.

It bites into the 3090 pretty hard without MFG. In fact most of the benchmarks I looked at before buying put the 5070 above the ex-flagship when drag-racing games in sub-4k resolutions, due to the 3090's higher amount of VRAM. Even then, throw in some DLSS Performance and it evens out. If only Nvidia had just said "3090 performance" instead of that stupid 4090 stunt in early marketing.... :laugh:

Now admittedly I'm a little biased given I own and use the newer card, so take my endorsement with a generous teaspoon of salt. It's only like a 1% performance uplift based on this very site's database. Nigh-intangible.

This is a rare take I agree with 110%.:toast: Admittedly GDDR7 helped the 50 series out in this respect, but it's also why I still feel semi-comfortable endorsing 12GB cards. Efficiency.

Until it is, you don't think AI companies will get bailouts? Every company would love for you to rent hardware instead of owning it, on top of that paying for an AI subscription.
The current "shortages" aren't the same as the HDD or GPU mining bubbles.
Once prices went up, they never went back down to before shortage or hype levels, you can easily see that with HDD's and GPU's.

And it's interesting that people will defend Nvidia for them solely having a high end GPU, or for an upscaling feature which carries a significant price premium, ie. 9070XT vs. 5070Ti. Having a halo card doesn't excuse a company worth near $5T to not move the industry forwards. For example, the 5080 is only 12% faster on average than a 4080 super, that isn't what I consider "moving the industry forward" when a new x80 tier used to beat out the previous gen flagship.
Nvidia restricts a part of those features of a software suite to the 50 series, conveniently ignored despite a multi-trillion dollar company could at least let its users try the feature on older cards.
But I don't understand this "AMD had to be bullied" mentality, they promised the feature was coming a while ago, and I doubt any major company is reading forum posts. The reality is it takes time to develop a feature when there is less R&D to deliver those same features, with some patience it turns out official FSR4.1 looks and performs better than the Optiscaler mod. However this yet again proves gamers have no patience to wait, the AAA game industry of slop and $70-100 titles is plenty of proof alone.

RT has been stagnant for years and based on videos made by some for more knowledgeable people it might be permanently stalled and some people foresaw it coming.
Power consumption is ever increasing. Power efficiency is going down.
VRAM is still stuck at 8GB for even 60 class cards limiting both game developers and gamers.

Tell me again how Nvidia is moving the industry forward by coming up with software features their competitor inevitably have to adopt?

Only halo cards like the 4090 and 5090 sold ad workstation prices. Utterly meaningless to 95% of people even if they got one for free.
For anyone else just get a 9070 XT unless you specifically require CUDA.

DLSS 4.5 is certainly not a generation ahead of FSR 4.1.1. Looks like Nvidia has run into diminishing returns here too (like they did with RT).
Now they're banking on Neural Rendering and AI slop filters to give them an advantage for a few years until they, inevitably run into the wall again.
