NVIDIA Readies GeForce RTX 5090 SE Graphics Card

NVIDIA is readying the new GeForce RTX 5090 SE graphics card, according to a report by GameGPU. This SKU could fill the gap between the current RTX 5080 and the flagship RTX 5090. Unlike the RTX 5090D and RTX 5090D V2, the RTX 5090 SE isn't a region-specific SKU aimed at complying with U.S. AI accelerator export controls, but is rather a mainline gaming GPU product. It is based on the same "GB202" silicon as the RTX 5090, but is cut down from it, featuring fewer streaming multiprocessors (SM), and a narrower 384-bit wide GDDR7 memory interface. The memory size is still 32 GB, achieved using a mixed density of 24 Gb and 16 Gb memory chips.

NVIDIA is carving the RTX 5090 SE out of the "GB202" by enabling 110 out of the 192 SM physically present on the silicon, resulting in 14,080 CUDA cores, 110 RT cores, 440 Tensor cores, 440 TMUs, and an unknown ROP count, probably 144. Meanwhile, the TGP of the RTX 5090 SE is expected to be around 500 W, down from 575 W of the RTX 5090. NVIDIA is looking to target a launch MSRP of $1,500, but you can be sure that the street price will be much higher.

Spec wise its what the damn 5080 should have been all along, albeit with 24GB.

If it is true, no doubt its being introduced to compete with the new, RDNA 5 9070XT sucessor cards in 2027, until the 60xx are ready In 2028.

I was hoping for a middle ground between the pro 6000 and the 5090.

32GB can be limiting on vr but 96 is too much.

How is this RTX 5090 "edition" in any way? This is RTX 5080 Super but is called RTX 5090 SE instead. It's is so far cut down version that it's closer to slightly spiced up 5080 than is to "SE" 5090 But you know, with 30x framegen and DLSS 7 it'll be as fast as real RTX 5090 for just MSRP of 599€ !

Mixing 24Gb and 16Gb chips to reach 32GB?
So.... Once you fill up 24GB, you can expect VRAM performance to tank?

TBH, I would rather have 'only' 24GB VRAM.
They could then sell it a bit cheaper, and have none of this mixed speed nonsense.

When I bought my 5090 in early 2025, I expected it to be surpassed by a Super/Titan or whatever by now, not to have a cut-down lesser 5090 product enter the market.

Extra bizarre. :eek::confused: It needs 4x 2 GB + 8x 3 GB to achieve 32 GB.

If the 5080 Super 24 GB doesn't come out then this one doesn't really need 32 GB. Not for gaming anyway, it's way underpowered for a 32 GB buffer.

Which has 160 ROPs. And 96 MB L2.
Of course the Pro has a different VRAM buffer by using 2 GB chips on both sides.

Also, people calling it a proper 5080 keep forgetting that there's not a single $1000 AMD/Intel GPU to make RTX 5080 look two tiers behind. NV did right by not overproviding.

The 5080 is 389mm^2, so is the 4080S, along with the rtx 3070 being 392mm^2.
So in other words the 5080 and 4080 are the successors to the 3070, not the 3080.

More like a 5080 Ti from all the specs besides VRAM. Seems like a product tailored for AI since every other spec is more meaningful for gaming.

Whereas a 5090 SE with cut down specs but still 32 GB should be very close to normal 5090 for AI.

The 5080 is more of a 70 class card at 389mm^2 die size, the 4080S is the same die size and the rtx 3070 is 392mm^2, the rtx 2070 is 445mm^2, but the gtx 1080 is 314mm^2, now that's a 60 class chip and card, sold as an 80 class chip and card. And that's the generation that solidified them selling lower class chips as higher class cards. Always remember, the worst generation is the gtx 1000 series, performance is a byproduct of them skipping 2 process nodes straight to 16nm, IPC was the same between maxwell and pascal.

How does the die size matter to the customers? All we care for is bang per buck and it vanished.

The 5050 we should have, *based on my feelings and the alignment of the planets.

Jokes aside, this one will end up selling for the 5090's original MSRP of $2,000, while the AI folks who need all that bandwidth and compute power will buy the original model at whatever price it goes for.

That's if AMD had 384-bit version of RDNA 4. Nvidia users do not need it as they buy shit RTX 5080 for 1250€ anyways also RTX 5060 Ti 16GB for 550€ (maximum cost for lowest performance possible or X)

So....an RTX 5080 (what should have been) Super. Instead it's renamed to RTX 5090 SE ("Super Effete") and priced at $2k, but actually retail for $2.5k Got it.
