Corsair RM650 (2019) blasted some white smoke on its rear

Just few days ago, i smell some bit of transistor/component burning somewhere, i thought it was just outside or some equipment, even tried sniffing on my PC cant really tell, but yesterday, the smell just dialed up to eleven and i now see visible puff of white smoke coming out of the rear of the PSU. Funny enough im just playing a games just fine and no system anomaly or shutting down happened, it just run and even attempted to reboot and play heavy games again and no issues. But to be sure i jsut turned it off and i took out the PSU for warranty claim.
While waiting for the claim, ive also been thinking of just replacing it with a higher wattage PSU. Im seeing Seasonic and FSP power supplies on my local shops (Focus and Hydro Pro series), are there any other suggestions on brand? Maybe preferably with Japanese caps as i believe my Corsair are using lower quality caps with the burning components.
 
This really sounds like a capacitor on the secondary side must have exploded. I wouldn't use this power supply, what you did there by placing that damaged unit under load could have cost you an expensive component on your PC. Anyway, 650 W is on the low end for your specs, I would look for an unit on the 850-1000 W range, just to be safe. Good thing your 4070 is also a 8-pin model, or I'd advise you to budget $25 for a ThermalProtect cable too, even if it's very unlikely a 4070 will experience meltdowns.

What's your budget for the upgrade? Seasonic Focus is generally a decent midrange option, but you can probably find a better unit for a lower price if you look around. The SPL Tier List is the best resource to look up an unit's shortcomings these days. By the way, the RM (2019) is B+ tier PSU, downranked from A due to poor 3.3V performance. It's very likely this is the rail that blew up on your PSU, since it seemed to be mostly in working order despite the smoke show.

yeah, it was retarded of me to still test it but everything is ok so far.
I thought last time 650W was just fine on my system and im using a power meter to measure (aside from the transient spikes of the 4070 that will not show).
My CPU and GPU are undervolted in general for many years since i got the system.

My budget is ranging from 130-150usd which fits around my target 850W ATX 3.1 PSU as i might get a 5070Ti in the future as well as 5800X3D (which will both be undervolted again as i always do).
Ive been looking at that list for months now even before my PSU had issues and found bunch of stuff that i might get, i think the winner would probably be the one with the best/easiest warranty service on my region long with reliable specs.

Also, the smoke seems to come directly near the grill of the PSU at the back as if an insulator is melting.

There's a lot of good options, some even Platinum rated at that price range. It's mostly down to looking what's available where you're going to purchase, and considering warranty coverage etc. - Newegg seems to have the RM1200x Shift for 169 on sale right now. Modern 1200W platform. That's worth the money 100%. Though, I mentioned Shift for a reason, it might not fit on your case, depending on how the PSU is mounted, need to double check. If that's an option for you I'd not even waste time looking anything else up. There's also the be quiet! Power Zone 2 1000 W, little smaller but Platinum, same price, both great options.

I think your PSU was overloaded during a transient spike and that's what caused the failure, even if everything was properly undervolted. Still, shouldn't have malfunctioned, RMA it, then sell or repurpose :)

RM series are Corsair's midrangers, they're alright for largest majority of rigs. Not low-end, not fancy, on the "just works" range. That Lian Li power supply is decent, even though its platform comes from a smaller Chinese OEM (Zhongyuan Power). Seems to be well reviewed overall. It should satisfy your needs. Do look at purchasing a safety cable for your 5070 Ti upgrade when you get around to buying it though, unless you wanna join our infamous thread over there :p

Seems you are from the Philippines, do you have Super Flower available? If so at what prices?

Looking at the Cybenetics report that SX1000P PSU has pretty good results.
The only major drawback in my view is the noise profile, at load (>160-ish W) it's fairly noticeable. A system having a 5070 Ti + 5800X3D will be in the orange zone at load.
Otherwise I am pleasantly surprised by the mostly correctly set and conservative OCP and OPP trigger points.

Regarding the bait and switch with the bulk caps, it's indeed problematic that companies can't help themselves (hello be quiet!) with this practice, but on the positive side is Lian Li's statement about it.
I don't have a problem with changing the caps with comparable ones while maintaining all the specs (hour and temp rating aka endurance, capacitance, voltage) say changing a Nippon Chemi-Con 450V 680uF 2000h @ 105°C KMZ with a Rubycon 450V 680uF 2000h @ 105°C MXH.

Some mentions by Aris regarding this subject:
Personally I wouldn't skip the SX1000P for the bulk cap voltage aspect (it's not guaranteed that your sample will have 400V caps) but I would skip it primarily for the noise profile.

Still I don't want to sound overly negative about the noise, it might be that with your particular system, when at load, the other components combined will be just as loud as the PSU. This has to be tested as no one can know beforehand.
But something to take into account if you buy it.

Don't be fooled by this marketing hogwash. There is nothing to suggest just because a cap was [supposedly] made in Japan that it is superior. Nor is there anything suggest just because a cap was made elsewhere that it is inferior. It is all total hogwash.

Today, advertising "Japanese capacitors" is just a carry over marketing "gimmick" from years ago when leaky caps were a big problem. AT THE TIME the only large suppliers of "solid" (not "solid-state", not "electrolytic" - just solid, as in not liquid)) caps were located in Japan. But since then, manufacturers around the globe have ramped up solid capacitor production.

In other words, there is no reason top quality solid caps can't come from China, Taiwan, Germany, Brazil, the US or elsewhere. And for the record, manufacturers of solid caps produce a wide range of caps, including budget/entry level (read: lower quality, less expensive) solid caps too.

Japan may still dominate in terms of numbers, but nothing suggests their capacitors, as a whole, are any better (or worse) than those produced in other countries.

Oh, and for the record, there were (and still is) two primary reasons why electrolytics swell and may eventually leak (or even "pop" or explode open).

(1) Poor quality - motherboard, card and PSU makers cut production costs by buying cheap, and
(2) Underrated for the job. Those makers cut costs by buying less capable, cheaper caps.

Well, there's excessive heat too, but that's not the capacitor's fault. Heat is the bane of all electronics. Providing proper cooling is the case's job and it is the user's responsibility to ensure proper case cooling.​

ALL the major motherboard, PSU, and graphics card makers (the computer products most often plagued by faulty electrolytic caps) learned their lessons back then. The sheer numbers of warranty returns cost them dearly in actual costs to process those returns, repairs and/or replacements. But it also cost them dearly in terms of their reputations - which they are still fighting, hence the marketing hogwash.

Now whether those manufacturers have heeded those lessons is another issue, however. They no doubt are always looking for ways to reduce production costs.

That said,

(1) Capacitor manufacturers can and do make top quality electrolytic capacitors. And they are more than capable and reliable to be used in any of these applications with no problems. But they cost a few cents more (but so do quality solids) than cheap electrolytic caps, thus add to the cost of the motherboards, cards and PSUs.​
(2) When properly sized and rated for the intended application, there is no reason a quality electrolytic cannot provide many years of quality service on a modern motherboard, graphics card or in a PSU.​

The problem is, marketing weenies have trained (misled :() consumers to believing ONLY Japanese, solid caps will provide quality service. But that's just marketing hogwash.

This sadly, puts the onus on us, the consumers. We must do our due diligence and research before plopping our money down. Sadly, that is no guarantee of no problems. But if we stick with the major, reputable brands and avoid their lowest, budget entry level models, we certainly increase our odds of long, reliable service.

For the record, I still look for "solid" caps in the marketing hype. But I am not concerned if not made in Japan. In fact, it is not uncommon for capacitors manufactured by a Japanese company to actually be made in Chinese (or elsewhere) factories anyway!

With ANY product, brand names really mean nothing - except, maybe, probably higher costs.

Brands names are all about consumer perspectives. We "believe" the product is superior simply because the brand name "printed" on the product is a recognizable brand. Heck, odds are, the product was really made by some unknown OEM.

While true, some "generics" are cheap, inferior knock-offs, there is nothing to suggest an off-brand cannot be just as good, if not better than the more expensive brand-named product.

We see this all the time in generic meds and even store-brand foods in our grocery stores. Why not in electronic components?

Kenmore appliances are really made by Whirlpool and Panasonic.

Okay, but just because you buy Rubycon or Panasonic, that in no way guarantees you won't get a faulty component or one that fails prematurely.

Plus, it just is not logical (or correct) to assume every model line made by a company in the trust column is superior to every model line from a company in the avoid column.

Lets not forget, we can easily find "horror" stories here at TPU of products from top brands failing AND subsequent horror stories trying to get tech support for those failed products. :(

Also, those lists are rarely ever updated - suggesting a company that made one of the lists 30 years ago is still on the same list, regardless of more recent performances that may be better, or worse than before.

So I say again, brand names really don't mean anything. They may imply quality or poor quality. They may instill confidence or doubts. But a brand name guarantees nothing - other than, most likely, a higher price.

I never said ignore it. Look at just about every post I have made about PSUs and you will see I always recommend buying from a reputable brand.

I am just saying marketing weenies depend on this "perception" that brands are superior. Yet brand names are not a guarantee of higher quality or better reliability.

But lets get back to my first post here. I said, and still contend, that just because a solid capacitor is "marketed" as being a Japanese capacitor, that IN NO WAY guarantees it is superior to every capacitor made somewhere else. And in fact, that does NOT even guarantee it was made in Japan! It just has the brand of a Japanese company printed on it.

That's generally not up to the end consumer, we can just look at warranty on the thing that is sold to us, and reputation, which is often related. I'm fairly certain I've seen CapXcon electrolytes in higher end equipment. Add to this the march of time; 2016 is ten years ago. Meaning things change. I used to have an idea of who makes good electrolytes, but not anymore. Same as any other industry.

Right. And there is nothing to suggest a PSU manufacturer, for example, will source their individual components from the same supplier throughout the entire production life of a specific model. Designers and engineers don't typically specify brands. They specify specs. Then the company typically ask for bids.
 
It will be even more if that PSU takes the rest of your parts. Stop running it. The risks people take are wild.
